GYW Research Process and Outcome
As a means to strengthen advocacy efforts and to promote the leadership and meaningful participation of girls and young women (GYW) in decision-making processes, fifteen (15) Girls and Young Women were selected from our five project areas in Asante Akyem North and supported to conduct a community score card data collection to track their participation in decision-making at all levels.
Findings from the research revealed that GYW were less represented at the family/clan, traditional and local government level
Stakeholder’s Deliberate on Girls and Young Women (GYW) Scorecard Findings and Recommendation
On August 24, 2023, EWEF requested the presence of 30 stakeholders who belonged to diverse sectors, from all the five selected communities in our project areas, to discuss the GYW-led score card findings and research recommendations presented by the girls and young women
The invited stakeholders comprised of policymakers, educators and community leaders at the community and municipal level
Presentations were made on the community scorecard findings which showed that; there was a low level of representation of girls and young women in decision-making processes at all levels
This was followed by an open dialogue, which allowed Erudite to gather feedbacks on the key underlying issues which affected GYW development, and also provided stakeholders an opportunity to broaden their understanding on the issues that are limiting girls and young women’s participation in decision-making processes.
Actions and Recommendations
Some of the key recommendations that were highlighted was the need for strategies to be developed to increase the participation of GYW in decision-making processes at the traditional and local government systems.
It was also decided that girls and young women should be more empowered to thrive in male-dominated spaces.
While schools’ endeavor to establish more effective social groups to help girls build their confidence and self-esteem.
From the home, girls and young women should be encouraged to take up leadership positions in their society or community groups, and schools They should be consciously involved in decision making processes at home and during family and community meetings
Resolution
The stakeholder’s engagement was a well-directed step towards creating a more understanding and welcoming space for girls and young women into leadership and decision-making spaces in the municipality
Stakeholders were enlightened about some of the issues that hinder girls and young women’s meaningful involvement in such spaces and expressed their willingness to rally their unflinching support behind GYW who show interest in leadership at all levels
